Hermantown (20-8-2), the No. 1 seed at the Minnesota Class A tournament, is back in the state championship game for the first time since winning it all in 2022. On Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, the Hawks will face off with third-seeded St. Cloud Cathedral (25-4-1), which is in the title game for just the second time in school history. Both Hermantown and the Crusaders needed overtime to advance through Friday's semifinal games. The Hawks beat St. Cloud Cathedral 3-1 in St. Cloud back on Jan. 11 in a game in which Nick Hansen, the Crusaders' No. 1 goalie, was unavailable.

The matchup between top-seeded Hermantown and defending state champion Mahtomedi on Friday didn't disappoint. The Zephyrs scored twice in a 1:01 span late in the third period to force overtime, but River Freeman scored the game-winner for the Hawks 7:11 into the extra session for a 7-6 victory. It was Freeman's second goal of the game and he also had three assists while Alexander Francisco notched a hat trick.
John Hirschfeld got the equalizer for St. Cloud Cathedral with 1:09 left in regulation, then potted the game-winner 1:53 into overtime to lift the Crusaders to a 4-3 victory over second-seeded Warroad on Friday. Cathedral never led, training 2-0 and 3-2. Griffin Sturm and Cole Hwang had the other goals for the Crusaders.
Freeman paces Hermantown with 22 goals and 49 points and goalie Dane Callaway is 20-8-2 with a .935 save percentage and 1.82 goals-against average. Joey Gillespie has 31 goals for St. Cloud Cathedral whiole Hirschfeld has 27 to go with a team-best 81 points. Hansen is 18-0-1 with a .934 save percentage and 1.49 GAA.
